First-Year Experience Leadership Positions

Saint Louis University’s First-Year Experience leaders help students through their transition to college by serving as resources and role models. In addition to serving incoming students and their families, these positions are a great leadership development opportunity for you and are, of course, fun.

SLU 101 Summer Orientation Leaders

SLU 101 leaders are a select group of students who assist incoming freshmen, transfers, and their families during summer orientation. SLU 101 leaders facilitate small group discussions, share information through presentations, assist in the advising and registration process, serve on panels for students or parents, coordinate evening activities and much more. Applicants must be available for all training and program dates.

Oriflamme Fall Orientation Leaders

Oriflamme Leaders help create a successful Fall Welcome experience for first-year students. Leaders assist with move-in and lead residence hall floor groups and commuter students in activities such as the Spirit Competition and the Grand Center Street Party. They also facilitate peer group discussions and serve as a mentor and resource to incoming students. Applicants must be able to attend all aspects of Oriflamme training and Fall Welcome events.

Oriflamme Leader Position Description

University 101 Peer Instructors

University 101 peer instructors serve as student co-instructors with a faculty or staff member teaching “University 101: Enhancing First-Year Success” course (EDH 101). U101 is a one-hour course that meets for 14 weeks in the fall semester. Peer instructors assist with class preparation and facilitation, read student reflections and provide feedback.

U101 peer instructors also share their experiences at SLU and knowledge of campus resources with new students. The average time commitment is approximately three to five hours per week.

University 101 Peer Instructor Position Description

Commuter Assistants

Commuter assistants provide educational and social programming for for students who are exempt from SLU’s residency requirement. Each mentor works directly with groups of approximately 60-80 freshmen, serving as a guide and mentor. CAs meet with students one-on-one, holding weekly office hours and answering questions.

Applicants must be or have been a commuter student in the past and be available for all training dates. The average time commitment is 15 hours per week for a year.

Transfer Mentors

Transfer mentors connect transfer students to the SLU community through activities and initiatives in the first six weeks of the fall semester. Applicants must be full-time students who transferred to SLU prior to the spring 2016 semester. Transfer Mentors also serve as an Oriflamme Leader.

Transfer mentors are asked to serve approximately five hours a week for the first six weeks of the semester, with additional opportunities to serve in the first three weeks of the spring 2017 semester.

TRIO Mentors

The Billiken Bridge to Success program prepares students coming to SLU for academic success the summer before their freshman year. Peer mentors provide leadership for the program and assist throughout the school year with TRIO programs. Preference is given to applicants with experience in the Billiken Bridge or TRIO programs.

Applications for 2017 First-Year Experience leadership positions begin Oct. 31, 2016. If you are interested in applying, we strongly encourage you to attend an information session for additional information about each position and the selection process.

Before you apply, read the position descriptions above carefully. Make sure that you understand our expectations and are available for all training and program dates. This is a general application for all six leadership roles. 


Interview Process

Group interviews will be held on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. In your application you will select your interview time preference, which will be confirmed with you via email. If you do not receive an email, contact, as we likely have an incorrect email address.

We will primarily look at your communication and interaction skills. Once you have been selected for a position, you will be invited to an individual interview with questions more specific to that role.

Early Access for Study Abroad

Students studying abroad in the spring can apply early and take part in a special selection process held in November for Oriflamme Leaders, Commuter Assistants, and Transfer Mentors.
